❄️ Snow Day Round 2 ❄️

Once again due to the upcoming snowy weather over the weekend in the area we are rescheduling our field trip to the GIANTS exhibition at the VMFA to the following weekend. Please note the change in the time as this is super bowl weekend and I know some of us may have some events on Sunday afternoon.

Please join us Sunday February 8th 2026 at 12pm

We’d love for you to join us for an inspirational art walk and sit and sew connected to the GIANTS exhibition at the VMFA.

We’ll start by walking through the exhibition together, taking time to notice themes like scale, strength, and presence in the artwork. From there, we’ll gather to stitch, turning ideas and reflections into something made by hand.

You don’t need any stitching experience to participate. Just bring your curiosity and willingness to slow down, look closely, and create alongside others.

It’s a chance to connect, reflect, and make something together. We hope you can join us!

We plan to go to the exhibition on February 8th, 2026 at 12 p.m

Kat will be at the Cafe around 11am if anyone wants to sit and stich a little while before the exhibition.

Want to learn more about the exhibition?

We need to be our most giant selves: to think our most giant thoughts, express ourselves in the biggest way possible, and give ourselves permission to be giants. —Alicia Keys

High Museum of Art Article on the Exhibition

From the Brooklyn Museum

“Giants” refers to several aspects of the Dean Collection: the renown of legendary artists, the impact of canon-expanding contemporary artists, and the monumental works by such creators as Derrick Adams, Arthur Jafa, and Meleko Mokgosi. Immense pieces—including the largest ever by Mokgosi—are paired with standouts such as Parks’s seminal photographs, Wiley’s revolutionary portraits, and Esther Mahlangu’s globe-bridging canvases.

The term also evokes the strength of the bonds between the Deans and the artists they support, and among the artists themselves. Along with examining these links and legacies, the exhibition will encourage “giant conversations” inspired by the works on view—critiquing society and celebrating Blackness

We Have a Show!

We will also have a series of community sewing circles – bring your handwork and let’s get to know each other!

  • Wednesday, August 6, 4-7 p.m.
  • Saturday, August 23, 12-3 p.m.

Modern Richmond and CVAMQG are bringing together an incredible panel of modern quilt artists whose work is featured in the exhibition to share their journeys, design processes, and what “modern quilting” means in today’s creative world. The panel will also share their insights on what makes the quilts in the “Unbound” exhibit modern. Whether you’re a seasoned quilter, a curious beginner, or just love bold textile art, this is a night you won’t want to miss.

Maggie Schubert, Modern Richmond Chair and a Modern Quilter, will moderate the panel featuring artists Candra Parker, President of the Board of Directors for the Modern Quilt Guild, Donna Blalock, Kat Van Bourgondien, and Wanda Ann Dotson.

Come early and join the workshop led by Maggie Schubert, “A Modern Take on English Paper Piecing,” from 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. Attendees will learn how to make their own English paper-pieced (EPP) curve with exposed stitches.

This workshop requires separate registration from the panel discussion.

All levels of experience are welcome and registration fees will cover all needed supplies.
